Wenn die Zeiten ineinander fliessen - When Times Flow Into Each Other

U.a. gehörten zwei ihrer Schürzen dazu.

After my mother died, I took over some things of her, among others  two of her aprons. As I slide the steaming iron over the fabric, taking care not to iron in any more creases, the mental cinema begins. How I ironed these aprons as a child. 58 years ago. How I ironed the handkerchiefs of my father and the uncle who lived with us and how my mother warned me that Uncle Hans would not be satisfied if I ironed creases into his handkerchiefs.

The uncle who raped the child. Over and over again. What thoughts and feelings did the little girl have regarding her mother's words?

How infinitely difficult it was when she asked me to immediately tie my aprons myself. How old was I? Five? Six? A small child. Crossing the ribbons with the hands on her back. Pulling it from behind through the loops on the side and tie a loop at the back.

How I saw a neighbour who looked after me, when my parents were working, how she taught her children to knit. She showed it to me, too. But the constant beatings and sexual violence made me very slow and I hadn't got very far. At home I asked my mother to teach me. Now she stood behind me and slapped me every time I took a stitch wrongly on the needle or dropped it. And of course I made more "mistakes" the more and the harder she hit. And the more mistakes I made, the harder and more often she hit.

So I'm all the more pleased that I'm sewing again, albeit under the guidance of a female expert. My first pair of pants in six years. Suitable for the 15 kg of water that the cortisone brought to me. At whim the elastic waistband can be folded down half or two thirds. The belly has enough space and the pants sit wonderfully and go well with my style.
